What Is a Smart Water Bottle?

Smart water bottles can help you track your water intake. Many of them also sync with other smart devices you may already own, like a fitness tracker or Apple Watch, and some even have their own apps. Based on parameters like height, weight and more, they can monitor your drinking habits to determine if you are drinking enough water throughout the day. Furthermore, smart bottles can use this data to provide reminders, taking the guess work out of staying hydrated.

1. Thermos Smart Lid

At first glance, few people would guess that this bottle was “smart.” This is due to the fact that the line of Smart Lid bottles from Thermos look rather unassuming. While they look like virtually all the other water bottles you’ve ever used, the lid boasts connectivity with a companion app, which allows the Thermos Smart Lid bottle to measure your water intake. The app also includes a Hydration Calculator that works out how much water you need to drink based on your personal data. In addition, the Smart Lid can also provide you with real-time temperature readings of the contents of the bottle. The Thermos Smart Lid is compatible with both Android and iOS devices and even feature Fitbit integration. Finally, the Smart Lid bottle can hold 24 ounces and has a 12-day battery life. As we mentioned above, the Thermos Smart Lid certainly isn’t the most attractive smart bottle on the market. Furthermore, the bottle is not insulated, meaning that the temperature of its contents will fluctuate with the ambient temperature. That being said, it is one of the more affordable “smart” bottles on the market, so what you give up in style you gain in savings.

2. Hidrate Spark 3

The Hidrate Spark has been a leader in the smart bottle industry for a number of years. The latest offering, the Hidrate Spark 3, is the company’s most advanced smart water bottle yet. The bottle has a sensor inside the bottle that measures and records how much water you drink. This data is then sent to its companion app via Bluetooth. What sets the Hidrate Spark 3 apart is how it reminds you to drink more water. Many smart bottles rely on companion apps to do this; however, the entire Hidrate Spark 3 bottle glows when you should be taking another sip. Furthermore, you can choose from three different light patterns to ensure it gets your attention. Additionally, you can set reminders at regular intervals or when the app identifies that you are behind on your water intake goal. The Hidrate Spark 3 is BPA free and features a silicone sleeve. This textured exterior improves grip and minimizes condensation. In addition, the bottle fits standard cup holders, bicycle bottle cages and backpack bottle pockets. Unfortunately, due to the sensor being located on the interior of the bottle, it is not recommended that you use any liquid other than water in the Hidrate Spark 3, including hot water.

3. BellaBeat

While this smart water bottle is tailored for women, anyone can use it, but the available colors may not be to everyone’s taste. There are a few different bottles in the BellaBeat line, while the Spring is the company’s latest and greatest. The BellaBeat Spring has a premium feel, as the bottle is made from glass and features a stylized silicone sleeve to improve grip. Like the other smart bottles on this list, the BellaBeat measures water intake and provides a hydration plan tailored your goals and lifestyle. The BellaBeat has an accompanying app that connects to the bottle via Bluetooth. This app logs data in real time and provides a snapshot of your daily progress. Unfortunately, the BellaBeat Spring is one of the more expensive smart water bottles on the market. If you are looking for a more premium feeling smart bottle combined with a classy design, you may be willing to fork over the extra cash.

4. Botell

The Botell smart water bottle hails from the Land Down Under. As with all of the other smart bottles on this list, the Botell records your water intake in real time, logging the data with its companion app. The app breaks this information down into easy-to-understand charts and graphs. Furthermore, like the Hidrate Spark, Botell reminds you to drink by glowing. One of the coolest features of the Botell will appeal to those interested in sustainability and the environment. Botell tracks how much water you’ve consumed and translates that into how many single-use plastic bottles you’ve saved by refilling and reusing your Botell. Unfortunately, the Botell smart water bottle is not yet available for purchase, but you can sign up for the Botell’s mailing list to be notified when they hit the market. Other than smart water bottles, you should also get a USB desk fan to stay cool in the hot summer.
